- THE SHE DEVIL OF DOOM v.1.0 JULY 19, 1994
-
- Hello, and welcome.
-
- The most lothesome creature ever to grace the Shores of Hell is waiting
- just for you. Nervous? Trembling? I would be. This is no ordinary
- creature. It will lure you in with her charms. Entrance you with her
- beauty. Hypnotize you as she dances upon her outswept wings.
- You will not even realize as her gaze meets yours, as she moves toward you,
- as she wraps her sweet caressing arms around you... and tears you
- limb from limb!
-
- This is... the She Devil!
-
- Beautiful. Beguiling. Brutal.
-
- Many a hero has met their DOOM in the embrace of the She Devil.
-
- ===========================================================================
- INSTALLATION:
- If you think you have what it takes to face up to this menace, releasing
- her is easy (quite possibly the easiest thing you'll do for quite sometime):
-
- 1). It is recommended that you make a backup copy of the DOOM.WAD file.
- This is the huge, hunkin' meg-and-a-half monster of a file that
- resides in your main DOOM directory. And it is the very heart and
- soul of DOOM itself. If something goes wrong, and this file bites
- it, you will have great difficulty ever playing the game again.
- So backup. It won't happen often, but better to plan for disaster.
- Don't let the little voice in your head saying "... but, DAMN! It's
- a meg and a half!" sway you from making this backup.
-
- 2). Next, if this documentation and all the accompanying files that were
- in the SHEDEV archive (ZIP file) are not currently in your main DOOM
- directory, it is imparative that you put them there now. You will
- receive error messages up the wazoo if everything is not precisely
- where it needs to be.
- It's easiest to just unzip the entire SHEDEV1.ZIP file into the
- DOOM directory. For those of you who are festideous housekeepers,
- I've included the batch file DELDEVIL.BAT which will delete all
- the files that came out of the archive (but not the archive itself),
- so it's not a messy proposition to just unzip everything where it
- should be.
-
- 3). Start the installation by typing "SHEDEV". This batch file uses
- Bill Neisius' great DMGRAPH.EXE as the means for extracting the
- original DOOM demons and for installing the She Devil. DMGRAPH
- is included in the SHEDEV.ZIP archive, but if your DOOM directory
- already has a copy of DMGRAPH.EXE, you might want to check the date
- on it. If it's newer than version 1.0 (dated March 1994), you can keep
- it instead of the one in the archive. The batch file won't care, as
- long as it finds a DMGRAPH in the main DOOM directory.
-
- During installation, you may see a message like:
-
- "File:SARGA1.PPM already exists. Will not overwrite"
-
- This is perfectly normal. DMGRAPH will attempt to extract the
- original demon graphics and save them as PPM files. If the PPM
- file already exists (say, if you've installed other replacement
- graphics, such as Jody Melanson's fabulous Barney Doom, and THAT
- installation procedure already saved the original files), DMGRAPH
- will not overwrite that file (because we wouldn't want to save a copy
- of Barney over our original demons, and never be able to retrieve
- them). This assures that you'll always be able to restore your
- game of DOOM to it's original state (just don't delete anything
- from your DOOM directory if you're not absolutely sure what it is!)
-
- 4). Once the installation is completed, all you have to do is start
- DOOM as you normally would. All games, be they singles, network
- play, nightmare, or even custom episodes, will work just the same.
- Except now, instead of meeting up with those big ole Pink "Muncher"
- demons (the ones that come up and bite you on the arm), you'll
- have to deal with the She Devil!
-
- 5). To get rid of the She Devil and restore your DOOM graphics to the
- original, "just-out-of-the-box" foes, simply type "UNshedev".
- This batch file, again, uses DMGRAPH to restore the original
- demons to their rightful place.
-
- 6). You can then type "DELDEVIL" to delete the SHEDEV .PPM files
- floating around in your directory and clean everything up (DELDEVIL
- will NOT delete DMGRAPH, just in case you had a later version and
- will never delete the SHEDEV1.ZIP archive).

- ===========================================================================
- WARNING:
- The She Devil graphics are somewhat "adult" in nature, in that they
- depict female nudity (such as it is). While certainly not pornographic,
- it bears stating that if you are easily offended by such material,
- please refrain from installing the She Devil.
-
- Also, please do not allow the younger set the opportunity to play DOOM
- while the She Devil is installed.
-
- Finally, I'm sure there will be those that feel this replacement somehow
- glorifies violence against women. It doesn't. The She Devil is simply my
- representation of an age-old mythical beast which many societies believe
- has populated the underworld for centuries. This is NOT a woman, just as
- the great Cybor-demon is not a man. These are demons. Pure and simple.
- We don't like demons, do we?!?

- HINTS:
- My favorite She Devil Level (hey! that rhymes!!) is Episode 3, Map 4!
-
- Start up DOOM, select Ultra-Violence, then type "IDCLEV34"
-
- A She Devil will be RIGHT in front of you when you first start. It's so
- quick, you might even need God mode (or you can hold down the up key
- as the room is revealed and hope you run over the rocket launcher that's
- in the middle of the room). Once you get that Devil, there are
- more in the room down the hall and to the right, just before the stairs.
- Kill all those and there are even more through the room on the left (beware
- of the crossfire of the eyeballs).
- There are a couple She Devils behind the wall in the center of the room.
- Make it past them and you can go through the transporter in the lava.
- There'll be a couple of invisible She Devils in the room you transport to.
- Through the hole in the wall you'll see BUNCHES of 'em in the next room.
- You CAN kill 'em through the wall, but what fun is that <g>. Transport
- back out, then go through the steel door there on the wall in front of you.
- As you enter the room behind the door, the far wall will begin to raise,
- releasing all the She Devils you saw through the hole in the wall (if you
- didn't kill 'em, of course). It's a challenge and a half!
-
- And that's just downstairs. Go upstairs and you'll run into many more!
